The opportunity to meet others and building camaraderie. College can be an exciting and scary place, the friendships built from joining a fraternity often have a different “feel” to them than other friendships. The ability to identify from shared values and experiences means having friendships that extend well past graduation.
An academic support network. Knowing which class to take, which professor is best and even which major is the best to achieve your life’s goals can all come from the experience and knowledge of fellow fraternity members. Fraternities often have study tables and tutoring available to improve grades, when the entire group has good grades, it not only reflects on the individual, but also the fraternity as a whole.
An endless stream of learning. The NIU Greek community is made up of all kinds of people from various walks of life. Getting to know those within an individual chapter as well as the community as a whole either through formal or informal events means opportunities to be exposed to different perspectives.
Endless leadership opportunities. Fraternities require a lot of work and organization given their high levels of involvement and programs. Not only are there opportunities for executive level leadership within the fraternity, but also within the student community to help further the positivity of NIU’s Greeks.
A professional network of alumni. Fraternities offer a vast array of networking opportunities to their members throughout their professional careers and even into retirement. Whether staying locally after college or moving throughout the country, most NIU fraternities have other chapters and alumni bases established nationally.
Becoming a part of tradition. Whether a chapter has been established for decades or only a few years, going Greek is the chance to make a positive mark on a community that has stood the test of time.
