Frequently Asked Questions

How will I benefit from joining a fraternity?

While every member’s experience is different, you will get what you put into it. As an undergraduate, expect opportunities to develop lifelong friendships with fellow members and other Greeks. Also the ability to volunteer and benefit the community through a variety of outlets will lead to the continued development as a integral part of society. Academics will benefit as well through collaboration with other members.

Some chapters even have excellent resources for professional development and alumni groups once you graduate.

Is hazing part of the fraternity culture?

No. Hazing is a form of abuse and any fraternity found to be committing hazing at Northern Illinois University will be suspended. Joining a fraternity is a fun, life changing process that should be positive for both the chapter and the new member. Hazing has no part of this experience and a new member should not feel any pressure or abuse to become part of the group.

What are the financial obligations of joining a fraternity?

The cost of a fraternity varies by chapter. Each fraternity typically has a new member dues rate as well as a member rate. Be sure to ask the rush chair of each fraternity you visit to discover their dues structure as well as cost of housing if it might be of interest to you.

The experiences and friendships I developed as a [Greek member] while at NIU have opened doors and opportunities well beyond anything I could have gained in a regular collegiate experience.

From friends I still maintain contact with to professional networking, going Greek proved to be a capstone to the education I received while attending Northern Illinois University.
